Saturday 23 July Guards Polo Club
The Hurlingham Polo Association has selected a younger, but no less competitive England team to play the impressive GT Bank-sponsored Commonwealth side in the Royal Salute Coronation Cup on Saturday 23 July. James Beim, playing at 3 is the most experienced member of the squad and is captain for a second year. Last year he led England to victory over South America and will be hoping to repeat that feat in two weeks’ time.
Beim’s England team-mates include Max Charlton at 2. Last year Charlton was named the Garrard Most Valuable Player on his first appearance in the Royal Salute Coronation Cup and will be hoping to impress his peers and win this prize again this year.
Jack Richardson will wear the number 1 shirt, making his debut on this day and at 24, the youngest player on the field. On being told of his selection, Richardson said: “I am very excited to be playing. It will be the first time I have played at this level and I would like to thank everyone for giving me this fantastic opportunity.”
Making up this impressive new quartet, and wearing the all-important number 4 shirt will be James Harper. Despite being a hugely experienced player both here in the UK and abroad, Harper will also be making his Coronation Cup debut. Currently playing in the high-goal alongside Beim, Harper responded to his selection with delight, commentating: “I have played for England several times but never for the Coronation Cup and this is the big day. I have been close a couple of times and was reserve last year so I am delighted to have made the cut this year”.
Former high-goal star and 10 goal player Eduardo Heguy, who will once again coach the team, added: “This is a very different team from last year but both Beim and Harper have been playing together this summer and I know them well. Charlton andRichardson have the potential to be very dangerous in the attack and my task in the short time available before the Coronation Cup is to get them all to fit together as a team.”
Ollie Cudmore, who was a member of the England long list along with George Meyrick and Richard Tyrone, will captain the Young England team which will play Ireland for the Diamond Jubilee Trophy. Meanwhile Tyrone, who has a British passport, has always tied his flag to the English mast rather than the Irish one and has already represented England on several occasions. When asked what his plans might be for Coronation Cup Day he commented: “England is the team I want to play for, but I am always happy to play for Ireland provided it does not affect my chance of being selected for England.”
In a change of format, this Diamond Jubilee Trophy match will be played after the showcase Coronation Cup game at 5.15pm. This gives Royal Salute’s VIP guests and the many spectators an improved matchcard, featuring two top quality, afternoon games.
Tickets are already on sale for this most famous of international polo days. Grandstand seating, VIP fieldside parking and hospitality packages are still available and substantial discounts are available to all members of the HPA, the sport’s governing body and organiser of this world-class sporting occasion.
