Guards Polo Club, Windsor Great Park – Saturday 26 July 2014

Battle has commenced – Argentina has just revealed its team, who will take on England at the Audi International for the Coronation Cup at Guards Polo Club, Windsor Great Park, on Saturday 26 July 2014. The Argentines, sponsored by Equus & Co, will be fielding no less than two 10 goal players* (there are only ever a handful of 10 goalers at any one time) and probably two of the world’s best ever polo players – Adolfo Cambiaso and Facundo Pieres.

This year’s Audi International will showcase some the greatest polo that this country has ever witnessed and will undoubtedly be the spectacle of the forthcoming English season.

Argentina is often regarded as the greatest polo nation in the world. Any team it fields will include skilful players, great ponies and lots of South American flair – the foursome for the Audi International will be no exception.

Accompanying the 20 goal Cambiaso-Pieres combination will be Julio Ruggeri (3) and Francisco Belaustegui (3). Although slightly less experienced than their exceptional 10 goal teammates, Ruggeri and Belaustegui are certainly no strangers to the game of polo and will provide formidable support to Cambiaso and Pieres.

The Audi England team is yet to be announced but there is no need for England supporters to be worried – our boys have recently proved that with the right line-up, Argentina is beatable. The last time England took on the mighty Argentina on British soil was five years ago back in 2009 when the South Americans won 12 goals to 5. More recently in April 2014, England defeated the Argentine team on its home turf in Buenos Aires for the second year running - no mean feat and an accomplishment, which will go down in the polo history books.

Over recent years, England has proved itself as one of the toughest nations in the sport. With four consecutive International Day victories under their belts, England will have the added bonus of the home supporters and will be sure to give Argentina a run for its money.

In addition to what will be some unforgettable polo, the Audi International also offers exceptional hospitality and a range of entertainment for what is guaranteed to be a great day out.

Note to Editors

* Polo Handicap System

The polo handicap system was created back in 1890 so that teams could be more evenly matched when using players with varying abilities. Players are rated on a scale from ‘minus 2 goal’ for a novice to ’10 goal’ for an elite player. A rating of 2 goals and above usually indicates a professional player. It is not (nor has it ever been) an estimate of the number of goals a player might score in a game, but rather of the player’s worth to his or her team. It is the overall rating of a player’s horsemanship, team play, knowledge of the game, strategy and horses.
